Mardi Gras in March Block Party: A Colorful Celebration in Garden City

The Mardi Gras in March block party, celebrated on March 16th, was a vibrant display of community spirit, music, and dance. It marked the culmination of an engaging Passport Adventure program that began on March 1st. This city-wide exploration and celebration program attracted nearly 500 attendees, including families and lively young ones. They gathered to enjoy the festivities and complete a journey through Garden City’s local talent, businesses, and the communal bonds that make our city unique.

Showcasing Local Talent, Culinary Delights, and the Passport Adventure

The celebration was alive with diverse performances. The Star Belly Dancers and Jeff Martin, a traveling magician who specially attended from out of state, captivating Garden City kids and kids at heart, added an exotic flair and a touch of magic! Meanwhile, local musicians like the Red Light Challenge and the Steve Fulton Band delivered electrifying live performances, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

As attendees enjoyed these performances, they also relished the offerings from various food trucks. Traditional palate delights included etouffee, gumbo, and smoked mac n cheese with a “Chef’s Style” option, loaded with collard greens. Each vendor provided delicious eats that added culture to the day’s enjoyment, ensuring a perfect blend of music, dance, and gourmet bites that enveloped the celebration in a festively vibrant atmosphere.

A Passport Adventure and Prizes Galore

The Mardi Gras in March block party also marked the grand finale of the Passport Adventure, a journey through Garden City that encouraged exploration and support of local businesses. Participants turned in their completed passports, filled with travel stamps, eager to discover what prizes awaited them.

The anticipation built up to the prize drawing, where luxurious Staycation packages were up for grabs. These packages included overnight stays at The Riverside and The Lofts at 35th and Clay, complemented by gift certificates for dining and experiences at local favorites like Ling and Louie’s, Wepa Cafe, Potter Wines, and Rolling Hills Vineyard Urban Tasting Room. The array of prizes, generously donated by local businesses, reflected the community’s vibrant spirit and generosity.

Reflecting on the vibrant Mardi Gras in March block party, the assortment of prizes generously donated by Garden City’s businesses was a true highlight, captivating participants with various local offerings. Other notable prizes came from Push & Pour, Somewhere Bar, Sunflower Florist, and Uhaul (Garden City). For craft beer lovers, IdaWild Brewing, Barbarian Brewing, Western Collective, Twisted District,  and Bert’s Brewing offered gifts, further appealing to those with a taste for unique and locally brewed beverages. Culinary delights were well represented, with Black Moon Pizza and Cafe Luciano’s offering gift certificates that promised a feast of flavors. Casa Bella Home Décor and Ricochet Home Consignment contributed to the mix with prizes that promised to add elegance to any home. At the same time, wine lovers had a chance to enjoy experiences from Telaya Wine Co., Potter Wines, Split Rail Winery, Sturman’s Wine and Cigars, and Coiled Wines, all known for their exquisite selection.

This fantastic array of contributions from Garden City’s businesses, including the memorable offerings from Cadallic Matt’s, Combat Sport Supply, Moxie Java, The Farm, Section 37 Axe Throwing, and Zion Glass Blowing, highlighted the rich tapestry of local offerings. We would be amiss if we did not mention the fun and witty wine glasses from your very own Garden City Visitors Bureau filled with an assortment of Mardi Gras beads, candy, and Telaya Wine Co. swag and Potter Wines tasting cards and cute coffee mugs with $5 Dutch Bros gift cards.

From gourmet food and fine wines to home furnishings and exhilarating experiences, each prize reflected the quality and diversity of Garden City, making the Mardi Gras in March block party a memorable celebration of community spirit and local enterprise.

I would love to start my morning with a delicious latte and Guru donut from Maxi Java on Chinden, then a long walk on the Greenbelt with my furry old man, Yankee (9-year-old rescue). The dream of living the van life and parking my new, customized Sprinter van at the Boise Riverside RV Park near the Boise River beckons. I can leisurely enjoy the latest best-selling novels I borrowed from the Garden City Library during my scenic Greenbelt jaunt. The library’s reputation as one of the busiest in the state piques my interest.

After my morning coffee and reading session, I like to add some shopping to my day. I head to the Eclectic Curio Vintage Store and the Assistance League Thrift Shop to explore their unique finds. Following this retail therapy, I go to Cobbys Sandwich Shop, a Treasure Valley institution since 1978, for a delightful lunch. Their mouthwatering Clam Chowder and satisfying sandwiches never disappoint.

In the afternoon, I venture into the world of wine, starting with tastings and small plates at Telaya and then Cinder. I go back along the Greenbelt on my cruiser, immersing myself in its scenic beauty. As evening draws near, I eagerly anticipate a delightful dinner at Wepa Café, where I relish the flavors of Puerto Rican cuisine. To cap off this fulfilling day, I go to Potter Wines, where live music awaits, providing the perfect ending to a perfect day.

I stay at the Riverside Hotel, cozily on the lower level with a patio that opens to the pool—perfect for the kiddos to splash around. My morning ritual? A quick stop at the Riverside Grill in the hotel for my essential one cup of coffee. I’m not one to splurge, but I don’t waste time getting that caffeine into my system!

 

For breakfast, we head over to The Huck House. It’s got something for everyone: traditional fare for the purists and hipster delights for the adventurous. Come lunchtime, my family’s love for authentic Mexican cuisine takes us to the cherished Taqueria sol de Jaliscos. It’s a little family-owned joint that’s stolen our hearts.

 

Dinner is a hearty affair at The Hit List, where we indulge in their fabulous burgers and sandwiches—perfect for a family feast without breaking the bank. After eating, we love to play and explore the greenbelt, biking and stopping at various parks along the riverside paths.

 

When it comes to music, I can’t help but plug Potter Wines. We’re all about supporting local talent and only feature musicians who play their original songs. It’s truly a place to witness brilliance. For crafts and shopping, my daughter and I can spend hours lost in the wonderland of Quality Art.

 

For a bit of unusual family bonding, we head to Section 37 Axe Room. And when I need to find my center, a meditative walk along the greenbelt is my sanctuary. As for exercise, you’ll find me at Asana Climbing Gym, challenging my kids to a race to the top of the wall. It’s all about living and loving life in our little corner of the world!

In Garden City, my stay-and-play itinerary is an absolute adventure! I always opt for the Riverside Hotel, starting my days with a delightful cup of coffee from White Cloud. Breakfast is a treat at The Riverside Grill, and by lunchtime, I’m savoring the wholesome offerings at ROOTS Market. Dinner becomes a special occasion at Sofia’s Greek Bistro in the Plantation Shopping Center.

To stay active, depending on how my day shapes up, I might enjoy a session at YogaSix. For retail therapy mixed with creative exploration, I find myself at the Plantation Shopping Center, browsing through stores like D&B Supply and Ross, and engaging in artistic endeavors at the Board & Brush Creative Studio. On pleasant days, the Greenbelt Market is my chosen retreat. This scenic spot along the Boise River offers excellent food and drinks and a panoramic view and hosts weekly events like beer and wine tastings. As an artist and crafter, I’m particularly drawn to The ReUse Market, a treasure trove of materials.

My journey often leads to the Sapphire Room at the Riverside Hotel in the evening. Here, I relax to the sound of live music sessions, which vary from Jazz to Bluegrass, all in a cozy, welcoming ambiance. Adding to this is a must-visit to the Idaho Pinball Museum, where I immerse myself in their interactive collection of pinball machines. This diverse and engaging itinerary makes my stay in Garden City vibrant and memorable.

My staycation day in Garden City is an eclectic mix of local flavors and activities. I start my mornings with a fresh coffee from Moxie Java on Chinden. But no staycation is complete without breakfast at Merritt’s Family Restaurant. Their world-famous scones and authentic country diner breakfast are a must for me.

Come lunchtime, I head to Black Moon, a cozy spot on Chinden Boulevard, where I indulge in their delicious pizza, sandwiches, and salads, accompanied by a selection of beer and wine. For dinner, it’s Garibaldi’s for me. Their authentic Mexican cuisine in Garden City is simply unbeatable.

For my family, playtime is a cherished part of our staycation, and it often means heading to the Greenbelt. Together, we enjoy walking, biking, swimming, or just exploring. The endless possibilities along the scenic Boise River provide the perfect backdrop for our family adventures. It’s our unique way to connect while enjoying the area’s best wildlife. Music is another passion, and catching a concert at Revolution Concert House is a highlight. It’s an exhilarating experience I look forward to as a part of a special night out as often as possible.

As a baseball enthusiast, an evening at a Boise Hawks game is an essential outing. We relish the simple joys of hotdogs, popcorn, and cold drinks while cheering from the third base line at Memorial Stadium.

My staycation in Garden City isn’t just about relaxation and fun; it’s about experiencing the best the city offers in its unique way.

My staycation would begin with booking a charming Airbnb in the scenic Garden City. I’d kick off my mornings with a delightful coffee beverage at my beloved Push & Pour, where I always savor a hemp milk matcha. I appreciate the festive atmosphere adorned with local artistic photos and the friendly pups that frequent the place for their morning libations and visitations.

The day begins with a delightful breakfast of chilaquiles at Taqueria Las Brazas, a place renowned for its authentic flavors and hearty portions. The perfect start to any morning, their chilaquiles are a must-try for anyone seeking a traditional taste of Mexican cuisine.

My staycation would undoubtedly include visiting Project Flux, a remarkable performing arts nonprofit organization that nurtures a collaborative environment among artists, free from hierarchy, to create immersive experiences. I might catch a performance or participate in a community class, depending on my mood and the day’s schedule.

To fuel my creative side, I’d explore the ReUse Market, an eco-friendly haven for affordable materials for my artistic projects. Then, I’d indulge my passion for art at Zion Warne Studio, renowned for its colorful glass creations and special themed collections.

For lunch, I’d opt for pre-ordered take-out from Big K BBQ. Their menu is a feast of flavors with tender smoked ribs, mouthwatering pulled pork, scrumptious chicken, and delicious beef. The sides are just as tempting, featuring Smotatoes, BBQ beans, bacon-jalapeño mac & cheese, potato salad, and Carolina cole slaw. Known for their top-notch to-go orders and catering, Big K BBQ is the ideal choice for a satisfying midday meal to feed my crew. To wrap up the day, I’d mosey on over to Westy’s Bowling Lanes for a family-filled afternoon of fun, offering bowling lanes, pool tables, and video arcade games.

In the afternoon, I might partake in a sound bath and meditation at the Garden City Library, attending a session presented by Soundwell Boise. Skilled ambient musicians would weave together calming tones using crystal singing bowls, steel tongue drums, bronze gongs, ambient guitars, musical chimes, and Native American flutes, creating an immersive and tranquil experience. Afterwards, I could drop in for a class at Studio Move, where they offer a variety of dance, barre, and yoga classes for both adults and youth — a perfect way to stay active and engaged. Meanwhile, the guys might head to Cadillac Matt’s Barber Shop for some fresh fades, enjoying their own kind of pampering and relaxation.

This diverse range of activities makes for an enriching and balanced afternoon for everyone. To conclude my well-rounded dream staycation, I’d savor a dinner of Birria tacos at Tacos El Rey and dance the night away at The Farm, a perfect spot for fun and dancing.

And Garden City has a bunch of them. Check out Barbarian Brewing, Brown Beard Brewing, Clairvoyant Brewing, Idawild Brewing, Powderhaus Brewing, Twisted District, and Western Collective for craft beers and good times.

C is for the Corridor Surf Shop & Necessary Goods.

If you want to try the surf wave, SUP the river, or Quinn’s Pond, here is your place to get geared up and buy some cool merch.

With everything from clothing, pet food, lawn and garden to sporting goods, D&B has just about everything.

You can get some quality quesadillas at Barriga’s Mexican Restaurant, El Gallo Giro and Taqueria Las Brazas.

R is for Riverside Hotel.

There is always something happening at the hotel, whether it’s a show at Bar 365 or the Sapphire Room, a conference or live music on the Sandbar patio. It’s definitely the place to stay.

S is for The Stagecoach Inn.

A legendary spot with fantastic food, and a fun bar, and don’t forget to order a slice or two of the four cream pies offered.

T is for Telaya Wine Co.

With a patio right on the Greenbelt and award-winning wines and customer service, no trip to the GC is complete without a stop here. If you like wine, you also should visit Cinder Wines, Coiled Wines, Par Terre Winery, Potter Wines, Rolling Hills Vineyard Tasting Room, and  Split Rail Winery while out and about.

U is for U-Haul.

You’ll need to rent one when you decide it’s time to move to Garden City.

V is Visual Arts Collective.

A contemporary fine arts gallery, performance center, and cultural center committed to presenting exhibitions and events for artists working in visual and performance art, film, music, dance and theater.

W is for Wepa Cafe.

Originally from Caldwell, ID, Q Morrow is a NYC-based guitarist who plays jazz, Latin, and Brazilian music.

  • As a sideman, he’s worked with artists such as the Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Chabuco, and Liz Rosa, to name a few, and performed at venues including Carnegie Hall & The Monterey Jazz Fest.
  • He is currently on the faculty at Jay Zs RocNation School of Music, Sports, and Entertainment at Long Island University Brooklyn, teaching guitar, music theory, and aural skills classes. Q co-leads TRAQ ATAQ with bassist Sam Trapchak.

Mark your calendars now, because Meriwether has a full month of events to keep you busy!

Meriwether Cider is owned and operated by the Leadbetter family, a group of adventurous firefighters and nomads. Meriwether ciders are fizzy, refreshing, and delicious, each crafted with a hint of hops, blackberries, or ginger, without artificial flavors, essences, or sugar.

According to Meriwether, Cider has a rich history in the United States but almost vanished during Prohibition. They believe cider bridges the gap between wine and beer and is perfect for casual outings with friends or sophisticated dinner parties with in-laws. This small-but-mighty winery earned a silver medal from Cidercraft Magazine for its rosé collaboration with Meriwether Cider — and that’s just one of the many highly drinkable offerings that Par Terre’s husband-and-wife team puts out.

When temps warm up in June, reach for their celebratory Sparkling Rosé or crisp En L’Air White and enjoy it on the tasting room patio.

Come by early to take advantage of the amazing Kismet Kitchen brunch from 11 am-2 pm. Vendors, including  Slateroc Woodworx, 3 Sisters Meats, and Adventure Tails will be set up from 1 pm-4 pm and Telaya will serve wine from 11 am-6 pm.

June 23 – 25: Rosé Day Duel. Telaya will release two wines of the same varietal for the weekend and ask customers to vote for their favorite. The winning wine will then become available from that day forward. Don’t worry – the wine that doesn’t win will still appear in another duel after getting some extra time to age in the bottle. 

June 23: Pop-up #Sip2Give First Friday Event supporting the Boise Bully Breed Rescue. Telaya has chosen Boise Bully Breed Rescue as the featured Sip2Give participant! On June 23rd, Telaya will donate 10% of all online and tasting room sales to this fantastic organization. More about BBBR.

April Showers bring May Flowers and this month we’re celebrating Garden City’s renowned local breweries.   There are so many great places to sample craft beer and cider in Garden City that you could spend the entire day drinking ale and pounding pilsners. In fact, there are more wineries, cideries, and breweries per square mile in this town than anywhere else in Idaho. Get familiar with our craft breweries to get outside, enjoy a pint, and soak up some sunshine that we’ve all been waiting for!

The Yardarm will become your neighborhood bar even if you don’t live in the neighborhood!

This is the brewery you’ve been dreaming of! This fantastic spot for upcycled beer and a great wine bar in the “beaches” neighborhood of the Garden City is only open seasonally from April through early October. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss, grabbing a fresh cold beer straight from the tap out of a storage container. Who says you need a shiny big building to sell some great beer?

Built out of new ideas and recycled/found objects, you’re invited to come claim a stool! The Yardarm was brainstormed over beers at the Corridor Surf Shop, a logical partnership!  It’s a “one off” project that supplies an experience you’ll remember, so don’t miss their limited season!  Their Instagram – Yardarm  site lists hours and special events, with updates on the daily action. This is the perfect place to soak up some sun and wave to the river floaters!

At Twisted District Brew Co. you’ll find a range of delicious beverages including craft beers, cider/radler, hard cider, craft cocktails, wine, and many non-alcoholic options.  They’ve got a popular malty beer that’s a good ol’e German-Style doppelbock, and a great coffee lovers drink honoring the Push and Pour Coffee shop, the Push and Porter.  This cold brew draft is perfect for when you want that extra kick!
